Job Description

Join us for a career with endless possibilities.

Over the past 5 years, American Airlines has taken delivery of over 500 new aircraft and has invested billions of dollars in new aircraft, technology, infrastructure and most importantly, in our employees. We’ve built the largest airline in the world and are generating record-breaking profits, but we are just getting started. We are transforming our culture by focusing on validating the trust placed in us by our frontline team members and have broken ground on a brand new integrated campus where all 120,000 employees will interact and collaborate.

The Undergraduate Intern position is a developmental assignment that provides interns with real-time work projects, leadership development opportunities, as well as an opportunity to learn about the company and the airline industry. Work projects involve assignments that are relevant to American’s current business needs and opportunities. Interns are afforded travel privileges enabling them to connect to the international and domestic destinations that American Airlines serves.

The Finance Undergraduate Internship program is being offered during summer 2020. It is a structured program with opportunities to visit and better understand airline operations, opportunities for mentoring as well as gain valuable exposure by presenting your project(s) to senior management.

Within Finance, each Divisional Controller team seeks to partner with the business unit to support the need for financial analysis relating to investment decisions. These investment decisions include the need for headcount, capital and operating expenses. Analysts help develop business cases and financial analyses for business unit proposals in order to secure the needed funding. Analysts are expected to understand and use discounted cash flow analysis when building such business cases. We are looking for team members who will drive innovation and evolution within our business as we assist each division to deliver new tools and technology to manage the airline, helping to improve operations and the customer experience.

Analysts will be expected to develop relationships with their business units as well as other departments to maximize the effectiveness of projects designed to improve the relative cost performance for American Airlines. Analysts are also expected to present original analysis and strategies to senior management, design and improve departmental business processes, analyze the impact of projects on the airline’s cost structure, and work on ad hoc projects related to the airline’s strategic goals. Mastering this job will lead to a better understanding of how financial decisions drive the airline and the industry and will position the analyst for future opportunities both within Finance and other areas within the airline.

Financial Analysts are charged with budgeting and forecasting the operating revenues and expenses for each division within American Airlines. Analysts use financial modeling built around operational volume drivers to develop an annual budget and forecast those expenses monthly as volume drivers change. Analysts are involved in the monthly close process—researching payments, accruing expected expenses and using variance analysis to explain monthly results. As such, analysts should have a basic understanding of accounting principles as they work through booking expenses to the General Ledger and reconcile Balance Sheet accounts.
