The job is a member of the Global Communications team within the Global Engagement Division. The role is responsible for internal and external communications in their region. This individual needs to form close relationships with regional and US headquarters leadership in both the operational and commercial groups. They need to be self-sufficient in handling reactive communications and proactively recognize potential stories to share with media and team members.
They should be able to take larger news, stories, themes and strategies from American and make them relevant to the audiences in their region. They must be able to independently lead projects, while maintaining an open line of communications with their colleagues around the world.
What you'll do
• Taking ownership of tasks/projects and proactively communicates next steps, timelines and potential issues (including ambiguous situations) to appropriate stakeholders, including:
o Being a strategic leader in subject matter and areas of responsibility
o Identifying and developing strategies to better educate and promote American to international media and team members, as well as solutions to resolve challenges
o Managing agency partners to ensure their work is in keeping with our larger company goals.
o Serving as a spokesperson and responding to external inquiries from radio, television, print and online media outlets as well bloggers within their international market scope
o Managing media interviews and speaking engagements for senior leaders. Providing media training for the spokesperson and ensuring they are fully briefed and prepared to answer a range of questions including difficult or sensitive topics
o Participating in crisis response activities
• Collaborate effectively with other managers and leadership team, by:
o Working closely with senior leaders and colleagues to identify opportunities and potential issues
o Developing working relationships with key media and influencers in the region
o Becoming a trusted partner that can anticipate challenges and proposed well-though out solutions that they can then execute.
o Working with counterparts on the People, Government Affairs, Alliances, Sales, Marketing and other relevant teams around issues and news impacting countries or regions in their area.
o Organizing events such as press conferences and press trips and working with third parties such as tourist boards and vendors to ensure cost effective event management
All you'll need for success
Minimum Qualifications- Education & Prior Job Experience
• A minimum of 7- 10 years of previous communications experience
• Able to travel at least 25 percent of the month and work outside of normal office hours, as needed
• Excellent English written and oral communications skills, with a solid proficiency in the AP writing style
• Experienced user of computer programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
Desirable
• Previous airline experience
