American Airlines is currently seeking a Director of Government Affairs based in Phoenix, AZ.   This role will be responsible for directing and coordinating all political, governmental, and community strategies to support the company's business goals on a state and local basis wherever American Airlines provides service.  The position’s area of geographic responsibility will include Arizona, the Mountain West, Kansas, and Alaska.

 

What you'll do
  • Represents the organization in front of key government officials and policymakers
  • Develops and implements the organization's political engagement strategy with state and local elected officials, regulatory agencies, and key policymakers
  • Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with community leaders, business groups, executives, and government officials
  • Surveys the impact of legislation on the organization and develops the organization's response
  • Prepares and presents testimony (written and oral), developing issue papers, and creating presentations or other articles/briefs for the organization
  • Communicates issues to key staff and stakeholders
  • Interfaces effectively with senior management and communicates complex issues straightforwardly
  • Oversees and directs any state and local government affairs consultants who may be working for or on behalf of American Airlines in the assigned area
  • Provides local assistance for key federal projects, as directed
  • Works collaboratively with other company departments where state, city, or other governmental organization intersect with their goals/projects
All you'll need for success
  • Demonstrates the highest standards of personal ethics and integrity
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience/training;  Advanced degree preferred
  • 7+ years of experience in government relations at the federal, state, or local level, or with a key government agency; experience with aviation issues preferred
  • Ability to build and facilitate long-term relationships at all levels, both internally and externally
  • Ability to influence through outstanding interpersonal skills, collaboration, and negotiation skills
  • Ability to demonstrate time management, multi-tasking, and organizational skills
  • Ability to thrive under pressure in a fast-paced, changing, and complex environment
  • Ability to delegate effectively and to handle multiple responsibilities, manage available resources, make timely decisions, and understand the impact of those decisions upon others
  • Ability to understand the company’s strategic needs with ability to develop and implement ways to meet those needs

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with ability to effectively and clearly communicate a strategic vision and adjust the messaging, as needed for the audience
