Every day, we go beyond what's expected and reach for the remarkable, together. **YOUR ROLE** Role Summary The Senior UI Designer role is a subject matter expert in User Interface (UI) design and design systems at Alaska Airlines. As an individual contributor, this role will focus on design systems while exercising considerable judgment to make decisions in creating interactive guest experiences ensuring they visually communicate what the Product Designer articulated and provide recommendations to address clarity, usability, and brand across web, mobile app (iOS and Android), kiosk, and other digital mediums. Scope & Complexity We?re building a design system that has not yet reached maturity and that?s where we need a Senior UI Designer to help us get there. We?re looking for someone with strong strategic and tactical systems thinking that can flex at several levels of magnification. This role will need to be able to see the bigger picture of the design system and how it serves the organization by anticipating potential use cases and evolutions. As a governor of the system this Senior UI Designer will be highly skilled with motion, iconography, typography, color, and space to help guide other designers through creating the parts of the system that impact our guest experience. Key Duties - Act as a subject matter expert in User Interface (UI) design by exhibiting highly skilled techniques and deep understanding of best practices with motion, iconography, typography, color, space and all aspects of the visual execution of Alaska's guest facing digital experiences. - Represent Alaska?s digital brand and e-commerce by collaborating with all designers and cross-functional partners to lead the creation, iteration, and development of all design aspects of our design system including digital style guides and pattern libraries. - With minimal direction from leadership, exercise considerable judgement to make decisions in leading the design of UI elements that clearly communicate function, provide a clear path forward for guests, and reinforce the brand across channels and platforms to create relevant, simple and engaging experience for our guests. - Develop solutions for a clear vision of the future of the design system by applying a forward-thinking, strategic mindset in collaboration with fellow designers and engineers to go from where we are today to the vision state. - Exercise judgment to make decisions in strategic and tactical systems thinking that can flex at several levels of magnification to see the bigger picture of the design system and how it serves the organization by anticipating potential use cases and evolutions. - Apply deep knowledge in UI systems design to develop and own the documentation framework for all pieces of the design system (i.e. components and patterns), turn designs into symbols within Sketch, and manage versioning of the design system through Abstract. - Make recommendations and continually audit elements of the design system to ensure they meet consistency and design standards ? work with UX research and analytics to evaluate designs and incorporate findings by applying a test and learn approach. - Influence cross-functionally and partner/build relationships with cross-channel solutions that align with Marketing and other company wide partners, resonate with the guest and are optimized for brand, mobile/responsive, traffic, SEO, awareness, and conversion. - Guide/Influence/Coach others to advocate for the design system internally as well as externally and provide design system education/training to new users of the system. Job-Specific Experience, Education & Skills Required - A minimum of 5 years of post-education employment experience in user interface, interactive, visual, or graphic design experience and delivery in digital mediums. - A minimum of 2 years of E-commerce or transactional product experience. - A Bachelor of Arts or Science degree with a focus in graphic design, user experience, interactive design or a related design discipline, or an additional two years of training/experience in lieu of this degree. - Demonstrated experience elevating a brand's vision and visual language into digital experiences. - Industry leading portfolio showcasing design skills that demonstrate critical thought process, digital cross-platform experience and how UI design adds business value. - Advanced Adobe Creative Suite and Sketch skills, with the latest design/production tools and a demonstrated ability evaluating future tools for team productivity. - Deep experience with lean, agile product delivery, optimization tests, and workflow tracking (e.g., JIRA, VersionOne, etc.). - Experience leading the creation of (not just using) digital platforms, digital style guides, and UI pattern libraries. - Deep understanding, proficiency, and ability to supervise design tasks, including guidelines, cross-browser compatibility, accessibility standards, and optimization techniques. - Leads a culture of design/lean thinking, guest advocacy, accountability, and collaboration through independent contribution and consulting as a subject matter expert. - Working knowledge of web and mobile-based technologies such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, etc. - Strong conceptual and visual thinker, with a broad toolset for communicating complex ideas. - Deadline oriented with good organizational skills. - Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills. Preferred - Background or experience with animation or motion software (After Effects, etc). - Experience in rapid prototyping technologies for feedback and iteration including: HTML/CSS, Java Script, InVision, Principle, etc. - Proficient copywriting skills including UI copy, microcopy and calls-to-action. - Design, people, or project management experience.
