Every day, we go beyond what's expected and reach for the remarkable, together. **YOUR ROLE** Role Summary The Senior Financial Accountant is a subject matter expert in financial accounting and reporting at Alaska Airlines. As an individual contributor, this role participates heavily on financial reporting for internal, external and federal purposes, as well as exercises considerable judgment to perform technical research, prepare technical accounting memos, and own complex reconciliations and journal entries. Key Duties - Acts as a subject matter expert in financial accounting. - With minimal direction from leadership, exercises considerable judgement to prepare financial reporting documents, including significant portions of required SEC filings, internal financial summaries for executive leadership, and DOT forms. - Leads the preparation of monthly closing packages for all entities. - Records journal entries for assigned functional areas on a monthly basis. - Performs technical research and documentation as needed relating to SEC, GAAP, and COSO rules and regulations. - Manages execution of project plans in areas such as significant accounting evaluations, new accounting standard implementation efforts, and other ad hoc projects. - Provides efficient and accurate reconciliation of assigned balance sheet accounts. - Applies deep knowledge in financial accounting to perform variance fluctuation analysis of P&L accounts compared to plan and period-over-period changes in income statement and balance sheet accounts. - Makes recommendations to drive process improvement initiatives. Job-Specific Experience, Education & Skills Required - 4 years of experience in corporate accounting, public company audit, or related area. - Bachelor?s degree with a focus in accounting, business, or related discipline, or an additional two years of relevant training/experience in lieu of this degree. - A CPA license or eligible to sit for uniform CPA exam. - Strong understanding of accounting theory and practices. - Demonstrates technical knowledge of accounting procedures and a strong understanding of GAAP. - Ability to manage and develop staff accountants. - Advanced Microsoft Office skills with an emphasis on Excel. - Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. - Strong organization and time management skills. - Strong communication and interpersonal skills. - Ability and willingness to work a flexible schedule based on business needs. - Ability to act and operate independently with minimal daily direction. - High school diploma or equivalent. - Minimum age of 18. - Must be authorized to work in the U.S. ? Preferred - Public company audit experience in a Big 4 public accounting or other national firm. - SEC and financial reporting experience. - PeopleSoft experience. - Working knowledge of Workiva software. - Experience with internal controls. - Auditing skills, with the ability to research and reconcile difficult accounts.
