  • Responsible for being the subject matter expert for a wide scope of customs and trade compliance issues involving regulatory activity

What you'll do

  • Utilize internal and external systems to perform in-depth research of aircraft components and associated parts and equipment to advise the required detailed technical specifications needed for product classification
  • Performs day to day entry analysis to ensure American Airlines (AA) meets Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP’s) Importer Self-Assessment (ISA) requirements as governed by the Code of Federal Regulations CFR 19
  • Interfaces with all internal and external departments causing imports and exports, internal and external legal departments, CBP, vendors and custom brokers
  • Keeps informed of day-to-day airline operations involving field of responsibility. Assesses daily priorities in accordance with airline/departmental objectives and management directives
  • Develops customized procedures and special criteria for Trade Compliance team to remain in compliance to regulations
  • Coordinates with other airline departments, as required, to provide for effective and efficient implementation of engineering and global trade compliance dispositions
  • Actively engages with front line team members and leadership equally
  • Maintains knowledge of current and pending regulations, which affect areas of responsibility and ensures compliance with applicable regulatory requirements
  • Utilizes available resources to continually increase levels of technical expertise and practical experience. Also strives to improve communications skills, time management and other personal qualities pertinent to maximum effectiveness and efficiency in performing assigned duties
  • Reviews engineering drawings/specifications and provide technical details required for import and export classification
  • Develops metrics and standards for the department
  • Supports American Airlines with technical expertise if required to respond to CBP inquiries

All you'll need for success

Minimum Qualifications- Education & Prior Job Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an accredited program
  • 5 years Aviation engineering or equivalent work experience

 

Preferred Qualifications- Education & Prior Job Experience

  • United States Customs Broker License
  • Extensive classification experience with the use of the General Rules of Interpretation (GRI) and Harmonized tariff schedule, CBP rulings and explanatory notes to determine HTS numbers
  • Schedule B and ECCN classification experience
  • Knowledge of ISA/CTPAT Trade Compliance Program, C-TPAT Supply Chain Security, ACE, Civil Aircraft, Duty Drawback, NAFTA/USMCA and other special programs
  • Experience in supply chain, logistics, hazardous materials, in-flight products, aviation maintenance, foreign trade agreement/zone
  • Accounting, Finance, vendor billing, reporting and budgeting expertise

  • Must possess a strong aptitude for technical research and writing
  • Excellent analytical, data analysis, problem-solving skills, follow-up and follow-through skills
  • General knowledge of aircraft structure, systems, propulsion, and interiors
  • Basic knowledge of detailed drawings, bill of materials, standards, and processing
  • Understanding of MRP systems, concepts, and requirements
  • General knowledge of Military and Industry standards and specifications
  • Interface with both internal and external customers, vendors and suppliers
  • Microsoft Office skills: Excel, Word, Outlook, Access, SharePoint. PowerPoint, Visio, Project, etc.
  • Ability to self-start with a high sense of urgency, strong organizational skills and ability to multi-task and prioritize with a high volume workload
  • Strong work ethic and highest level of integrity
  • Excellent project management, communication, workshop facilitation and engagement skills with ability to lead working sessions with cross functional departments and vendors
