About The Job
This job is a member of the Payroll Operations Team within the Finance Division. The primary purpose of this position is to motivate, develop and provide leadership for department staff responsible for processing the Company's payroll for more than 100,000 employees. Plan, organize and direct department activities to ensure timely and accurate payrolls are generated.
Specifically, you'll do the following:
- Plan, staff, supervise and review work of assigned staff responsible for the accurate and timely administration, preparation, processing and distribution of payroll activities (e.g. payroll checks, quarter-end and year-end processing, filings, reporting, etc.)
- Ensures the payroll is in conformance to Company standards, labor agreements, Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, and tax regulations
- Ensures the proper reporting and payment of Payroll taxes
- Analyzes business practices and ensures proper controls
- Oversees payroll programs, processes, policies, system functionality and the day-to-day management of the payroll operations
- Ensures labor agreements are interpreted correctly
- Researches and resolves payroll disputes both internally and externally
- Identifies requirements for system modifications and ensures accurate implementation
- Develops recommendations to fix or enhance processes in order to improve efficiency and/or implement new service opportunities
- Plans, staffs, supervises and reviews the work of assigned staff
- Motivates, develops and provides leadership for employees
- Analyze business practices and ensure proper controls

- Recommend and implement process improvements to improve the control environment and increase the utilization of resources (people, technology, funds)
- Represents the department in cross-departmental work groups
- Manages permanent retention of payroll source documents and report records
- Flexible/adaptable to constant change and scheduling needs to meet deadlines
- Responsible for permanent retention of payroll source documents and report records
- Review, approve and provide documents (e.g. reconciliations, supporting schedules, process maps) by requested deadlines to the Company's external auditors, the Controls & Compliance group and Financial Reporting to ensure timely completion of quarterly reviews, the annual financial statement audit, SOX compliance testwork, and the filing of consolidated financial statements and supporting schedules with various government agencies
- Develop and maintain documentation for business and system processes for assigned responsibilities
- Review and approve the completeness and accuracy of system interfaces for assigned areas of responsibility
- Participate in the design, development, testing, implementation and documentation of accounting systems and related interfaces
- Recommend and implement system modifications to improve internal control, increase efficiency or reduce costs
- Identify, document and escalate system issues to the IT department
- Must be able to be on call
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or related business field or equivalent training/experience
- 6 years payroll and accounting experience, including at least 5 years of supervisory experience in a business environment preferaby in a large corporation with multiple unions and multi-state
- Knowledge of tax regulations, accounting and reporting requirements
- Ability to demonstrate outstanding leadership, interpersonal and teamwork skills with proven ability to work effectively in a variety of situations
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and work independently
- Ability to handle stress effectively and display a "can do" attitude despite tight deadlines; ability to meet deadlines without supervision
- Self-motivated, detail-oriented with strong organizational and time management skills
- Proficient with Microsoft Office software (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
- SAP experience
- Excellent presentation skills, with the ability to negotiate and effectively interact with all levels of management
- Excellent customer service skills
- Proven ability to manage multiple projects and successfully re-align priorities through effective utilization of available resources (people, technology, funds)
- Proven experience using innovative thinking with high degree of motivation and problem solving skills
- Proven working knowledge of fundamental accouting, internal controls and SOX knowledge
- Ability to provide continuous review of business processes and process improvements
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience with system implementation and testing; use of standardized methodology for documentation preferred
- Experience leading and participating in projects
- CPP Certifcation
