Every day, we go beyond what's expected and reach for the remarkable, together. **YOUR ROLE** Role Summary The Senior Network Engineer - Automation helps lead a team through a transformation towards a fully automated network. Exercising advanced technical skills and expertise, this role will effectively guide and collaborate with a dedicated group of engineers that help design, deploy, maintain, and secure Alaska's enterprise network. As part of the Network & Connectivity Department, the Senior Network Engineer - Automation will pave the way in a fast paced, team environment, working autonomously to help define the roadmap, and to assist the team in developing the skills to pivot towards automation. Possessing interpersonal skills, with the ability to foster and grow cross-functional relationships, will be as important as the technical skills. Strong process awareness and the ability to help mature an organization through a cycle of continuous improvement is essential. Scope & Complexity This individual contributor role is an expert in network automation engineering for Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air, and exercises considerable latitude and initiative to solve complex problems. Key Duties - Defines the strategy and drives a network automation roadmap that delivers the tools and mechanisms that result in a stable, reliable, and efficient operation. - Influences the decision making in collaboration with network operations, engineering, security, and other teams, to develop tools, self-service portals, and other capabilities that better support our internal customers and allow them to be self-sufficient. - Analyzes network team performance data to identify and implement opportunities for automation. - Develops detailed and advanced network automation process supporting an agile development methodology. - Automates workflows, processes, and configuration of sophisticated enterprise network devices, including routers, switches, firewalls, and wireless access points. - Leads the continuous process improvement life cycle that drives operational excellence. - Stays abreast of trends and changing IT networking and automation technologies and mentors junior engineers on how to incorporate emerging technology into their day-to-day work. - Engineers, tests, deploys, and supports complex automation capabilities, including automated incident remediation, in a 24x7 operation. - Participates in after-hours work as needed. Job-Specific Skills, Experience & Education Required - 7 years of hands on relevant networking experience, with 3 years of experience developing automation for network devices. - A Bachelor's degree with a focus in computer science or a related discipline, or two additional years of training/experience in lieu of this degree. - 5 years of supporting a large enterprise environment. - Thorough knowledge of all major networking protocols and technologies including BGP, OSPF, Ethernet, Cisco and Juniper platforms, load balancers, QoS, NAC, Ethernet, etc.) - Knowledge of code management systems and version controlling. - Effective communication skills (e.g., verbal, written, and listening). - Detailed oriented and highly organized, with ability to multi-task and work independently with limited guidance in a fast-paced environment. Preferred - Azure and/or AWS cloud skills and experience. - Familiarity with Fortinet firewall configuration. - Experienced with Ansible and Python. - Experienced developing web services. - Familiarity and experience with Agile development methodologies and practices.
