This job is responsible for helping to create and promote a cross-functional learning organization and continuous improvement culture through advanced analytics and data science.
The role is a part of the IOC Analytics team within our Integrated Operations Division.
 

What you'll do
  • Partners with IT, related business units, and outside vendors and business partners to implement the IOC vision for an industry-leading analytics capability around execution assessment and learning decision support
  • Works collaboratively and cross-divisionally with other analytics groups within American to identify business opportunities, quantify business impacts, and deliver actionable insights for the IOC
  • Creates compelling and holistic data stories for assessing the execution of both regular and irregular operational events
  • Designs and leverages the development of new and existing data sources to provide new perspectives around performance
  • Develops and applies statistical/machine learning models to uncover insights and drive value
  • Participates in collaborative research efforts with academic, research, and government agencies around data analytics, improved decision making, and learning decision support
  • Researches current practices and industry trends and keeps abreast of latest advances in data analytic techniques and IT solutions to solve complex airline business problems
  • Establishes connections with all levels and job functions within the IOC organization from front-line team members to senior leadership to gain insights into opportunities, data, people, and processes
  • Acts as an agent of change to help establish American Airlines as an industry leader in operational performance
All you'll need for success

Minimum Qualifications- Education & Prior Job Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in a quantitative discipline (Operations Research, Data Science, Industrial Engineering, Computer Science, Decision Sciences, Statistics, etc.)
  • 3 years job related experience
  • Expertise in at least one computer programming/scripting language (e.g. Python, R, Java, C++) and experience using data analytics software tools to analyze large data sets
  • Practical experience in data extraction, cleansing, analysis, and visualization
  • Familiarity with Big Data technologies
  • Familiarity with machine learning and AI-driven techniques

 

Preferred Qualifications- Education & Prior Job Experience

  • Master’s degree in a quantitative discipline (Operations Research, Data Science, Industrial Engineering, Computer Science, Decision Sciences, Statistics, etc.)
  • 2-5 years of experience in a technical/quantitative professional environment
  • Familiarity with airline operations, Air Traffic Control, and Air Traffic Flow management concepts
  • Familiarity with FAA SWIM data
  • Familiarity with contextual inquiry principles

 

Skills, Licenses & Certifications

  • Strong business acumen, statistical, analytical, and problem solving skills, and able to manage complex processes with cross-functional teams
  • Excellent written, presentation, and verbal skills, with the ability to produce concise, relevant, strategically-driven documents and presentations for senior leaders
  • Strong team player, detail oriented, and able to perform well under pressure
  • Passionate about data analytics and a visionary for how it can be applied
  • Must be able to handle multiple projects at one time
