You'll be an integral part of the Treasury organization, where Investment Management oversees over $35 billion in various retirement and benefit plan assets. Investment Management is also responsible for advising the Employee Benefits Committee (“EBC”), which exercises fiduciary oversight of the various plans’ investment activities.  You will also oversee the investment activities of American’s various defined benefit, defined contribution, foundation and health & welfare plans.  The Sr Manager, Investment Management reports to the Managing Director and is primarily responsible for the strategy, design and execution of all investment pools.  

What you'll do

401(k) plans

  • Oversee the execution of investment strategy across all investment pools
  • Conduct comprehensive due diligence on all existing investment managers through quarterly calls, quantitative analysis, and on-site visits
  • Source and conduct due diligence on potential new investment managers through both traditional quantitative methods and through qualitative sources
  • Challenge investment advisors on existing and prospective investment funds and strategies; meet with prospective investment managers, advisors and consultants to keep up to date with industry trends and market opportunities
  • Constantly seek to optimize strategic asset allocation of custom target date funds and portfolio construction of the multi-manager individual asset class active funds
  • Meet and present 401(k) investment updates quarterly to the EBC Provide investment updates to the Pilots DC Advisory Committee quarterly and on an as needed basis

Defined Benefit plans

  • Work closely with investment advisor to set the asset allocation strategy for the master defined benefit plan trust
  • Conduct comprehensive due diligence alongside the investment advisor on all existing investment managers through quarterly calls, quantitative analysis, and on-site visits
  • Source and conduct due diligence alongside the investment advisor on potential new investment managers through both traditional quantitative methods and through qualitative sources across public and private markets
  • Develop creative solutions for ensuring defined benefit plans are fully funded over a stated time horizon
  • Evaluate portfolio and manager level risk through Bloomberg, Morningstar, and other risk tools
  • Meet with investment advisor on a monthly basis to review investment performance of trust and underlying strategies and other special topics
  • Develop models to determine future funding requirements based on changes to assets, liabilities and other variables impacting funded status

What you'll do, continued

Corporate Cash

  • Work closely with investment advisor and global banking team to ensure unrestricted and restricted cash is invested according to investment guidelines
  • Evaluate performance of various investment advisors
  • Monitor compliance of portfolios with guidelines
  • Work with accounting team to handle all aspects of Sox compliance including validating market values of portfolio securities, security classifications and accuracy of financial statement disclosures

 

Endowments and Foundations and other plans

  • Recommend asset allocation, monitor and rebalance investments of American’s Foundations and Endowments and present investment performance to Boards each quarter
  • Oversee the investment management activities of the Canadian and other international defined benefit and defined contribution plans as well as various health and welfare plans

Other

  • Coordinate with Retirement Strategy, Medical Benefits, Corporate Accounting, Tax, Legal, Labor, Financial Planning and Analysis on all aspects of all plans
  • Attend and represent American at industry events such as conferences

All you'll need for success

  • Minimum Qualifications- Education & Prior Job Experience
    • Bachelor’s degree with Master’s degree preferred
    • 8+ years of experience in an investment management, investment banking or wealth management setting
    • Investment experience managing corporate defined benefit and defined contribution plans a plus
  • Preferred Qualifications- Education & Prior Job Experience
    • CFA charterholder or progress toward attaining a CFA charter preferred
    • Proven, self-motivated, results orientation with patience, perseverance, humility, and diplomacy
  • Skills, Licenses & Certifications
    • Self-starter with executive presence and the ability to manage multiple projects effectively involving multiple retirement plans
    • Strong problem solving and project management skills, with proven track record of performing complex assignments under tight deadlines while maintain superior quality in work products
    • Ability to manage external consultants, advisors, lawyers to complete assignments
    • Commitment to quality, pride in work and accepts complete ownership of responsibilities
    • Excellent ability to proactively and effectively communicate with all levels of management both verbally and written
