  • The Senior Manager, IT Architecture is a leader of the Architecture, Cloud and Engineering Platform Team, and part of the Technology Department at American Airlines. This team helps American ‘go for great’ by innovatively supporting philosophy, processes, technology and tools as needed to support the architecture and infrastructure of the application teams. This position is responsible for architecture and infrastructure of various consumer and employee facing applications and systems (both commercial and homegrown) in support of business objectives.

  • Manages a team of Manager(s),  Developers, Architects, Cloud & Infrastructure Engineers, and Contractors
    • Maintains staff by recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training employees; developing personal and transforming/growing our engineering capabilities
  • Accountable for identifying, designing, building, and implementing API services within portfolios and having end-to-end accountability for customer satisfaction, delivery effectiveness, and cost transparency; support strategic plans
    • Designs and maintains processes, procedures and support documentation
  • Facilitates the cloud lifecycle journey aligning to Agile, and DevOps with a strong metrics and analytical mindset to drive automation and self-service technology
  • Leads the architecture and engineering practice around Infrastructure-As-Code (IaC), to ensure that technology automation and orchestration is in alignment with business strategies, capabilities, and platform governance
  • Establishes, communicates, and drives end-to-end executable technology into a reusable code/template and multi-cloud model, and provides agility and ease-of-use
  • Maintains an effective approach on problem solving, multi-tasking, coordinating and scheduling in accordance with stated goals to ensure visibility and predictability
  • Works closely with other technology teams to identify dependencies and collaboration needs (business applications, dev/ops, digital applications, network, infrastructure, architecture and delivery)
  • Accomplishes financial objectives by forecasting requirements; preparing annual budgets; scheduling expenditures; analyzing variances; initiating corrective action
  • Maintains deep technical and business knowledge of industry directions and trends in the area of cloud and Infrastructure; active in owns quest for knowledge and professional growth.
  • Designs and maintains processes, procedures and support documentation
  • Collaborates effectively with various business units, cross-functional IT teams, Vendor Management and Finance teams and 3rd party vendors
  • Participates in contract negotiations with vendors under the direction of Vendor Management team

All you'll need for success

Minimum Qualifications- Education & Prior Job Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, Business Management or other related field.
  • 7 years of experience with architecture and infrastructure teams through a direct reporting relationship.
  • 5 years of experience overseeing large technology projects from inception to implementation in an enterprise environment.

Preferred Qualifications- Education & Prior Job Experience

  • Experience with cloud enablement & migration
  • Experience managing and creating the processes to support applications hosted in the cloud
  • Experience with airline business processes and supporting technology 
  • Experience leading Infrastructure teams in an Agile & DevOps model

Skills, Licenses & Certifications

  • Experience in Scoping, Planning, Requirements Gathering and Documentation, Design, Development and Testing, and RFP process 
  • Knowledge of Agile development
  • Strong leadership skills and proven ability to communicate and collaborate with different audiences at various level.
  • Ability to effectively lead staff under potentially high stakes and challenging situations
  • Ability to delegate responsibilities effectively
  • Demonstrated initiative, flexibility and ability to adapt to changing priorities and work environments
  • Experience in managing ‘mission-critical’ projects/migrations
  • Hands-on Knowledge and Experience in technology environment (software development, database development, operating systems design, hardware implementation)
  • Be available to manage production issues and off-hours support, communication and coordination
  • Travel as required (anticipated at 25% or less)
