The Director of Global Learning and Development serves a team of leaders and is responsible for creating the vision and strategic direction across three pillars of learning, development and recognition. As a collective, the team supports company-wide learning and recognition platforms, designs and delivers talent development programs and resources, and goes the extra mile to ensure all team members feel cared for, valued and included – some examples are the company’s new hire orientation program, new and existing leader development programs, high potential targeted programs, company awards, appreciation events, and the annual team member survey.

This position reports into the Senior Vice President, Global Engagement, and collaborates closely with People, Analytics, Finance, IT, Communications, various senior leaders, and industry-leading experts. This role is what you make of it, and we’re looking for an enthusiastic leader with a proven track record to effectively lead their teams forward with purpose, care, and accountability.

What you'll do

  • Sets vision and strategic direction for program design, development, delivery, management and measurement across learning, leadership, and recognition efforts
  • Provides thought leadership to senior leaders and teams in key areas of enterprise learning, talent management and development, appreciation and recognition, process and governance, performance development, organizational development, executive coaching, and various ad-hoc requests
  • Fosters a culture of feedback through facilitation and development efforts, working with leaders to understand areas of opportunity to drive sustainable change, translating insight into action
  • Leads a team of leaders through change with context, clarity and confidence, whether it’s performance alignment conversations, individual or group meetings, budget or goal setting discussions
  • Seeks new and maintains existing external partnerships with industry leading experts, consultants and speakers to serve various purposes, such development, design or delivery
  • Connects team leaders closely with People Analytics to measure program effectiveness and impact to the business  through a mixture of qualitative and quantitate data tools and resources
  • Interacts internally and externally with executive level management, requiring strong interpersonal and listening skills, high level of business acumen, as well as negotiation of critical matters, such as contract negotiations
  • Embodies and models the true spirit of American’s Purpose, To care for People on Life’s Journey and the behaviors within American’s Leadership Model (Care, Collaboration, Development, Results, Future)

All you'll need for success

Minimum Qualifications- Education & Prior Job Experience

  •  
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Human Resources,  Organizational Development or equivalent experience; Master’s degree preferred
  • Demonstrates the highest standards of personal ethics and integrity
  • 7 years of experience in leading a team in Learning and Talent Development or related field
  • Experience designing and scaling enterprise-wide programs in a complex global organization
  • Deep understanding of American’s purpose, objectives, the business environment, and role of a leader 
  • Understanding of business and management principles involved in enterprise learning, talent development and recognition
  • Understanding of principles and methods for curriculum and training design, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups, the measurement of training effects, and technology to support learning delivery
  • Experience in process, tools and techniques to manage people-side of business change to achieve required business outcome
  • Extensive successful  experience partnering with senior leaders on key business initiatives

  • Strong sense of cultural awareness with strategic, critical decision making skills
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills across levels, workgroups, and conversation environments
  • Proven ability to anticipate, adapt, and lead team and organizations through change
  • Strategic thinking and idea generation skills, balanced with planning/organization capability and a proven track record of timely execution
